Global Mandarin is seeking a smart, savvy staff writer for Wainao|WHYNOT, a Mandarin digital news magazine for young Chinese-speaking audience around the world. Our ideal candidate is self-motivated and versatile in covering different news topics and events.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Cover news events that drive Wainao’s audience’s interests.
  • Brainstorm with the team to develop new ideas to improve Wainao’s quality and performance.
  • Pitch and execute longer form stories in different formats such as features, interviews, commentary and/or editorial opinions.
  • Contribute to Waiano’s monthly Very Special Report and other special projects from topic selection, development to plan and execution.
  • Cultivate and grow a diverse base of reliable sources. Identify and pursue the most relevant interviewees for a story or for obtaining supporting material.
  • Contribute to video script writing, as well as social media posts, promotion campaigns and other projects as assigned.
  • Engage and moderate in social media and Wainao’s discussion forum as assigned.
  • Perform editorial tasks such as web editing and proofreading.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the director and senior editors.

Qualifications:

  • BA in Journalism or related fields.
  • Minimum 2 years feature writing experience.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Broad, deep knowledge of China related issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment as a member of a team and independently.
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to multitask.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and follow through.
  • Required language skills: Fluency in written Mandarin Chinese and proficiency in written and spoken English.

Global Mandarin is a new digital media platform by Radio Free Asia that aims to inform and engage with young Mandarin-speaking audiences around the world. As it begins delivering independent information that presents various perspectives on subjects important to its audiences, Global Mandarin is currently seeking an experienced and passionate Photo Editor to curate photo stories for the wainao.me website. This position will be based in either Washington, DC; Hong Kong; or Taipei.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Wainao team to shape, pitch, and develop photo story ideas.
  • Identifying and soliciting freelance photographers and visual journalists to join Global Mandarin’s contributor network.
  • Commissioning stories from freelance photographers.
  • Curating and repurposing Wainao’s original photography and research and clearing rights for photographs from freelance photographers, wire services, agencies, and all other sources of pictures.
  • Taking on photo story assignments independently – from shaping, pitching, and developing ideas, to photographing and writing text components – until completion.
  • Working with editors and writers, assigning shootings to complement article and special report production.
  • Pitching visually innovative and original approaches to features coverage, focusing on the online experience and demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
  • Working with the editorial team to plan annual reporting schedules and fitting photo stories into Wainao’s editorial calendar.
  • Working with the Director to develop a strong photo story component that drives Wainao’s visual and innovative storytelling.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in editorial photo production, conceptualization, and assigning.
  • Excellent news judgment and ethics, particularly passionate for visual and photo journalism.
  • Demonstrated ability in photo storytelling.
  • Strong computer and digital skills. Familiarity with web tools and photo editing programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP.
  • Proven deep research skills and knowledge of photo copyright and usage issues.
  • An expansive understanding of mobile-first experience and design. Basic coding skills are a plus.
  • Ability to build freelancer networks and train entry-level reporters.
  • Comfortable working with a remote team that is in different time zones. Able to attend meetings and work with team members remotely.
  • Fluency in Mandarin and proficiency in English.
